The correction of ears that stick out is nowadays a routine procedure in the aesthetic-plastic surgery. This congenital and often inherited malposition of the ears can lead to teasing and mobbing in both genders, beginning in childhood.
Since the ear has reached its definitive size at the age of 5-6 years, the correction can be performed in childhood. Many families decide to undertake such correction before the start of school in order to spare their children emotional trauma. Many adult women or men have covered their ears with long hair and now wish flat ears in order to change their hairdo or sport a put-up hairstyle. The form, size and position of the ears can be changed surgically, or earlobes of excessive size can be reduced.
The skin incisions can be made behind the ears or in a skin fold in front of the ear so that scars are not visible later. This access allows the cartilage to be thinned out or reduced and subsequently fixated into a new, bent, and more favourable shape with special stiches. A special head dressing should be worn for 5-7 days. After that we recommend the wearing of a headband, especially at night, for 2 weeks.
