Loss of skin elasticity is not the only consequence of aging. Volume shifts can also develop, most noticeably in the face. Hanging cheeks and deep wrinkles between the nose and mouth develop and the cheeks appear sunken. Many patients come to an aesthetic surgeon for the first time for a wrinkle injection. The only problem: most injection materials break down after 6 months to a year. Some disappear even earlier. Patients want a long-term solution.
We think that the transfer of the patient’s own fat is a very good answer to this demand. It has many advantages. A body material is used so there are no foreign body reactions like after some so-called permanent injection materials. The face can be contoured with fat: the desired volume is achieved gradually in various areas like lips, nasolabial folds (between side of nose and corner of mouth), forehead wrinkles and sunken cheeks. Asymmetries in the face can be corrected. This technique can be used for the back of the hand too, as women often complain of visible vein networks due to loss of fat tissue.
We have been using this technique for 6 years and are very excited at the possibility of obtaining such natural and durable outcomes with incisions of the smallest size and with an intervention of minimal complexity.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and under sedation. Some fat is harvested from the lower abdomen or from the thighs. After special preparation in which the healthy fat cells are isolated, the fat is injected into the desired area. The injected areas remain swollen for about 1 week.
Depending on the area, roughly 40-80% of the injected fat becomes embedded and remains in the tissue permanently. In most cases, the intervention needs to be repeated in about 3 to 4 months to achieve the desired outcome.
Lifting of the whole face by means of wide-area injection of the own fat. The volume of the lips, cheeks, chin, eye area, and eyebrows area can be enhanced. Wrinkles between nose and mouth have a limited response.
The cost ranges between €1,000 and €2,000. You can find more information, for instance the cost components of a fat transfer, in the menu option Costs.
